Day Trip from Bishkek to Burana Tower

What is Burana Tower?

Burana Tower is a historic minaret that once stood along the ancient Silk Road like for example Tash Rabat, where traders passed through centuries ago. It’s located in the Chuy Valley, in the northern part of the Tian Shan mountains – and trust us, the surrounding scenery is absolutely breathtaking. You’ll see lush green hills, and in the distance, giant peaks rising into the sky.

The tower was originally nearly 50 meters tall, but due to earthquakes and natural disasters, only 24 meters remain today. Still, it’s remarkable that it has survived at all – and it still makes quite an impression.

If you want to climb to the top, it’s possible – but be prepared for steep, narrow, and dark stairs. I have to admit I was a bit scared, but the stairs aren’t too long and the view at the top is totally worth it. You get 360° panoramas of the valley and the mountains, and it stayed in my memory as one of the most vivid moments of the whole trip.

The Field of Balbals – Turkic Stone Statues

While exploring the site, you’ll notice a field of stone statues behind Burana Tower. When we first saw them from the top, I wondered what they were – and then we walked over.

These carved stone figures are known as Balbals. They’re Turkic tombstones from the 6th century, originally meant to represent enemies slain in battle, and later repurposed as grave markers for ancestors. Some of them are even holding wine, which may symbolize early Christian influence.

The carvings are stylized but were made by the best carvers of the time, and it’s fascinating to walk among them and imagine their stories.

Prices and Opening Hours at Burana Tower

When we visited Burana Tower, the entrance fee was 100 KGS (approx. 1.20 USD) per person, which covered both the tower climb and access to the surrounding archaeological area. The site is open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore.

If you want to discover the entire area, including the minaret, museum, Balbals field, and take in the panoramic views, plan at least 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit.

Near the entrance, you’ll also find a small stand where you can buy bottled water, snacks, and a few local souvenirs like postcards or traditional crafts.

How to get to Burana Tower from Bishkek?

We took a marshrutka from the Bazaar Bus Station in Bishkek

I don’t remember the exact marshrutka number, but once you arrive at the station and ask for a ride to Tokmok, someone will always help you – transport is frequent and easy to find. The town of Tokmok is located about 70 kilometers from Bishkek, and the journey cost us 80 KGS / ~$1 USD.

Once you reach Tokmok, you’ll still need to get to Burana Tower, which is about 7 kilometers away. You can either take a local taxi or try to hitchhike. If you decide to take a taxi, it’s a good idea to ask someone nearby about the usual price so you don’t overpay. Hitchhiking is also a common practice in Kyrgyzstan, even among locals, but keep in mind that drivers might expect a small contribution – it works more like informal carpooling.

We chose hitchhiking. And in our case, we got lucky. A very kind driver was heading to work but told us he had time and could take us to Burana first. We had a short chat during the ride, and it turned out to be a lovely and effortless way to get there.
